Lotus 1-2-3 was a Spreadsheet program developed by Lotus Software (who are now part of IBM), which emerged from 1983 and went on to massive success. You might think that a Spreadsheet is as far removed from gaming as you could imagine (if you don’t count the flight simulator built into a later version of Micro Excel), but it was actually one of the main reasons behind an improvement in DOS gaming, and DOS use in general. It’s all down to memory and that pesky 640k conventional memory limit, and how it caused an unexpected problem for users wishing to upgrade their copy of Lotus 123 to version 2, the latest and greatest version at the time.
